Sleep apnea can affect more than your sleep.

Repeated breathing interruptions can disturb restorative sleep and reduce oxygen levels. Taking the warning signs seriously and seeking evaluation early can lead to earlier treatment—and help protect alertness, safety, and long-term health.

Side-by-side medical illustration comparing an open upper airway with an airway narrowed behind the tongue during obstructive sleep apnea
Open airwayAir moves freely

During normal sleep, the airway behind the tongue and soft palate remains open.

Obstructed airwayBreathing is repeatedly interrupted

In obstructive sleep apnea, relaxed tissues can narrow or block the oropharyngeal airway until the brain briefly restores breathing.

Simplified illustration for patient self-awareness; individual anatomy and the location of obstruction can vary.

Common signs

What you may notice

  • Loud, frequent snoring
  • Pauses in breathing, gasping, or choking during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness or persistent fatigue
  • Morning headaches, including migraines in some patients
  • Unrefreshing sleep or frequent awakenings
  • Difficulty concentrating or problems with short-term memory
  • Irritability, mood changes, or symptoms of depression
Why treatment matters

Protecting daily and long-term health

Untreated obstructive sleep apnea is associated with important health and safety concerns:

  • High blood pressure that may be harder to control
  • Heart disease and stroke risk
  • Type 2 diabetes and impaired blood-sugar regulation
  • Reduced attention, memory, mood, and quality of life
  • Greater risk of motor-vehicle and workplace accidents from sleepiness
Treatment options

Care matched to the patient

PAP therapy

CPAP, APAP, or bilevel pressure helps keep the airway open and is the most common treatment.

Oral appliance

A custom-fitted device may be considered for mild-to-moderate apnea or selected patients who prefer it or cannot tolerate PAP.

Inspire® / hypoglossal nerve stimulation

An implanted option for certain patients with moderate-to-severe obstructive apnea who cannot tolerate PAP and meet eligibility criteria.

Additional approaches

Weight management, positional therapy, lifestyle changes, or surgery may also be appropriate after evaluation.

Could sleep apnea be affecting you?

Answer a few questions about common signs of obstructive sleep apnea. Your answers stay on this device and are not submitted or stored.

This self-awareness checklist is not a diagnosis or a validated screening instrument. A sleep study interpreted by a qualified clinician is needed to diagnose sleep apnea.

Question 1 of 11

In your usual day-to-day life…

Treatment is matched to the individual.

A clinician considers the sleep-study findings, severity, anatomy, other health conditions, and your preferences before recommending treatment.

PAP

Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP, APAP, or bilevel therapy uses pressurized air to keep the airway open during sleep. PAP is a common first-line treatment and settings are individualized.

OA

Oral Appliance Therapy

A custom-fitted dental device can move the lower jaw forward to help maintain an open airway. It is often considered for selected adults with mild-to-moderate apnea or those who cannot tolerate or prefer an alternative to PAP.

HNS

Inspire® / Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation

An implanted system stimulates the nerve controlling tongue movement during sleep. It may be an option for certain patients with moderate-to-severe obstructive apnea who cannot use PAP and meet additional eligibility criteria.

These descriptions are provided for self-awareness and do not determine treatment eligibility. Testing and evaluation by qualified medical professionals are required.

Frequently asked questions.

How should I prepare on the day of my sleep study?

Do not take a nap on the day of your test. Avoid caffeinated beverages, and minimize fluids before your appointment unless a medical condition or your clinician requires otherwise.

What should I wear?

Wear loose, comfortable, and appropriate sleep attire, such as pajamas. Loose-fitting pants allow you to feed the leg-electrode wires through your pant legs. Leggings and tight-fitting pants should not be worn. For privacy and professional standards, sleeping nude or only in underwear is not permitted in the sleep lab.

Can I use lotion or other skin products?

Please do not apply lotion, cream, or oil to your body on the day of the study, particularly on your face, chest, and legs. These products can prevent sensors from adhering properly.

Do acrylic or polished nails need to be removed?

Yes. Acrylic nails and nail polish should be removed so the pulse-oximetry sensor can accurately monitor oxygen levels. When necessary, a toe with no acrylic nail or polish may be considered as an alternative sensor location.

How should I prepare my hair?

Do not use hair spray, oil, gel, or other styling products because they can interfere with electrode contact and create signal artifact. Hairpieces, extensions, and accessories that restrict access to the scalp must be removed before the study.

Why are electrodes placed on my scalp?

Scalp electrodes monitor sleep stages and brain activity. They are secured with electrode paste, which washes out with regular shampoo and warm water. Please arrive with dry hair; a hair dryer is available if needed because electrodes will not adhere properly to a wet surface.

What is the smoking policy?

Smoking and vaping are prohibited inside the facility. Once you enter the building, you may not smoke or vape at any time.

Should I take my regular medications?

Take routine prescribed medications at their regular times unless your physician has instructed you otherwise. If a medication is likely to make you fall asleep immediately, please wait until the technologist has completed your sensor setup before taking it. This helps prevent you from falling asleep during setup or falling from the chair. Bring the medication with you and take it only as prescribed; sleep technologists cannot dispense or administer medication.

Can I watch television, read, or use my phone?

Television is available while you are waiting to be set up. Once the study begins and “Lights Out” is called, television, reading, and phone use must stop or be limited as directed by the technologist. Lights Out marks the beginning of the evaluation, and following instructions helps ensure a valid study and prevent unnecessary repeat testing.

May a guest stay overnight?

Guests are permitted only when the patient is a minor or when an attendant is required to provide necessary caregiving assistance. Please notify the sleep center in advance so appropriate arrangements can be confirmed.

What physical assistance can the night staff provide?

Sleep technologists have limited ability to provide physical assistance and are not trained or permitted to push, pull, roll, transfer, or help patients get up. They also cannot administer medications. A patient who requires these services must arrange for a capable caregiver or nurse aide to remain with them.

Are weapons allowed?

No. Weapons of any kind are prohibited inside the facility and should be left at home before your appointment.

What time should my ride arrive in the morning?

Your ride may arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m. to pick you up after the study. Please coordinate the pickup time in advance and follow any specific instructions provided by the sleep technologist.

Will the night staff collect copays or payments?

No. Night staff do not collect copays or other payments on the night of the study. Billing and payment questions are handled by the daytime administrative staff.
